Europe's Biggest Drugs Bust

In Europe's biggest cocaine bust to date, 8,000 kg of raw cocaine have been seized by Portuguese police in the Algarve region of southern Portugal and a number of Spanish nationals arrested.

The Iberian coastline is the preferred means of entry into Europe for South American drug cartels.

According to official figures, 5,000 kg (11,000lbs) of cocaine had been seized by police in Portugal this year compared with 15,000 kg (33,000 lbs) in 2005.

Neighboring Spain ranks third in the league table of confiscated cocaine with 46.6 tonnes -behind only Colombia and the United States. In addition Spanish authorities seized 646.7 tonnes of hashish - 50% of the world total of confiscated hashish in 2005.

This weekend Anime Weekend an exhibition of Japanese culture takes places in Aveiro.

Anime in Aveiro


The event, which is sponsored by the Japan Embassy in Lisbon, will take place in the Fairs and Exhibitions Park and includes showings of popular Japanese animated cartoons (known as anime), workshops of origami and shiatsu, exhibitions, and even a Japanese restaurant serving Japanese food.

Aveiro is a twin city with the Japanese city of Oita in Kyushu.

Rock in Rio 2006

Rock in Rio

Portugal's huge summer rock festival, Rock in Rio 2006 will be held May 26 and 27 & June 2-4 at the Bela-Vista Park in Lisbon.

Festival tickets are priced at 54 euros a 2-day pass is 90 euros. Tickets will be available beginning in March.

Performers announced so far include Roger Waters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rui Veloso, Carlos Santana and the Brazilian group Jota Quest.
