Blandy's in Funchal is a Madeira institution and often a must-see sight for tourists, especially Brits, on their holidays on the Portuguese island.

The Blandys are the last remaining family of all the original businesses of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own wine company to this day.

The Blandy business began in 1811 and the family have a reputation as modernizers who have been able to keep pace with the ups and downs of the Madeira wine business over the last two centuries and thus remain in control of their original enterprise - making fine Madeira wines.

Funchal in Madeira has its own unique form of transport - the carro de cesto - a basket-like sledge on wooden runners steered by two sledge drivers called carreiros, dressed in white with straw boaters on their heads.

The carreiros, who range in age from teenagers to near pensioners, pull the wicker sledge with ropes attached to the front to gain momentum and then move behind the sledge to steer as they descend the slope from the hill resort of Monte into Funchal below.

Migrants From Brazil in Portugal

Migrants From Brazil in Portugal

Brazilian migrants make up the largest foreign community in Portugal, with over 160,000 Brazilians living in the country. Over one third of the total are undocumented.

Little Brazil

Last week the Portuguese government moved towards legitimizing the residence status of undocumented migrants, most of whom are from the Portuguese-speaking nations of Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome e Principe.

The announcement of the new Immigration Law coincided with the summit meeting in Brasilia between Brazilian President Jose Inacio Lula da Silva and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa.

The new law will require foreigners to enter Portugal in possession of promise of an employment contract, or to have received offers from the "Bolsa de Empleo", which will be published on the Internet by the Institute of Employment and Professional Training.

The new legislation also grants residence permits to undocumented immigrants who are already "effectively employed in the legal labour market," or are running their own enterprises.

Visas can now be renewed at city government offices, rather than only at the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) offices.

World's Largest Solar Plant

World's Largest Solar Plant

World's Largest Solar Plant.

The world's largest solar power plant is set to be built in southern Portugal.

The 60-hectare, 11-megawatt plant located in Serpa, south of Lisbon, opens in January 2007 and will produce enough energy for 8,000 homes.

Serpa is located in the region of Alentejo, one of Europe's sunniest places.

The scheme is a joint project of U.S. energy companies GE Energy and PowerLight Corporation, and Portugal's renewable energy company Catavento.

Portugal plans to open more solar power plants in the future in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

A plan to build a much larger solar power plant in nearby Moura has been under consideration for some years but has yet to be finalized.

Snow in Portugal

Snow in Portugal

Snow in Portugal.

Portugal has been suffering from some of the worst snowfalls to hit the country in recent memory.

The resort town of Figueira da Foz saw its first snow in more than 50 years. As temperatures plunged across the Iberian peninsula, Lisbon recorded its first snow flurries since 1954.

Snow blocked some of the nation's highways including the Santarem-Coimbra road.

Portugal's only ski and snow resort is in the Serra da Estrela, mainland Portugal's highest mountains. The area is a National Park with beautiful hiking trails in the summer and some piste at Covilha in the winter.

There are trains to Covilha from Lisbon taking between 3 hours 20 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes, depending on the train. There are also bus connections to the capital.

Cavaco Silva Wins Presidential Elections

Cavaco Silva Wins Presidential Elections

Anibal Cavaco Silva, previously Prime Minister of Portugal from 1985 to 1995, has won this Sunday's presidential election.

Mr. Cavaco Silva replaces President Jorge Sampaio, a Socialist, who has served two five-year terms.

The center-right Cavaco Silva won 50.6% of the vote ahead of two center-left candidates Manuel Alegre and former President and Prime Minister Mario Soares – the Socialists’official candidate - who came in a disappointing third.

Anibal Cavaco Silva is the first right-of-center president of Portugal since the 1974 Revolution.
