Funchal in Madeira has its own unique form of transport - the carro de cesto - a basket-like sledge on wooden runners steered by two sledge drivers called carreiros, dressed in white with straw boaters on their heads.

Carreiros
The carreiros, who range in age from teenagers to near pensioners, pull the wicker sledge with ropes attached to the front to gain momentum and then move behind the sledge to steer as they descend the slope from the hill resort of Monte into Funchal below.
