The police maintain a fairly visible presence in Lisbon, with officers present at many local events and patrolling in cars. The Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) is Portugal's main urban police force.

Crime
Drug-related petty crime may be a problem after dark in some areas of the city and the Intendente area of the capital is often cited as a place to be wary. On the whole, Lisbon is very safe compared with other European capitals.

The National Republican Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana) or GNR is the national gendarmerie force of Portugal. Members of the GNR are military personnel and are subject to military law.
