Portugal is the European country with the longest relationship with Japan as Portuguese explorers were the first western visitors to arrive on Japanese shores in the late 16th century. The Portuguese introduced both firearms and Christianity to Japan as well as several words that survive in the language. The first Portuguese came ashore on the southern island of Tanegashima in 1543.

The Portuguese influence on Japan dates back to the 16th century, particularly during the period of the Nanban trade (1543–1614), when Portuguese traders, missionaries, and explorers first arrived. The Portuguese introduced firearms to Japan, which had a significant impact on Japanese warfare, especially during the Warring States period. They also influenced Japanese cuisine, most notably through the introduction of tempura, a deep-frying technique for fish and vegetables. Other foods introduced include bread, which had previously been unknown in Japan, and sweets such as castella (a sponge cake), which originated from Portuguese bakers. Additionally, the Portuguese played a role in popularizing the use of sugar in Japan, which had significant cultural and culinary implications.

Jesuit missionaries, like Francis Xavier, played a key role in the spread of Christianity in Japan, though their influence waned after the Tokugawa shogunate began persecuting Christians. The interaction between the two cultures, although brief, left a lasting imprint on Japanese society, particularly in areas like language, art, and technology.
