Located in the southwestern region of Europe, 97% of the total population of Portugal (11,317,192) was born in the country.

Portugal regained its independence for good from Spain in 1668, and became a Republic in 1910. On 1 January 1986 Portugal joined the EU. Portugal has a population density of 114 people/km2 of density and a total area of 92,090 km2.


Portugal yearly ordinary temperature varies from 13°C (in the north) to 18°C farther south. The county has roughly 2500 to 3200 hours of sunshine a year, with 4-6 hours daily in winter about half the extent of sunhine in the summer.
