Municipal Museum Aljezur

Aljezur on the Atlantic Coast north west of Lagos in the Algarve has four small museums that can be visited on a combined ticket.

The four museums are: Aljezur Municipal Museum, The Sacred Arts Museum (Museu de Arte Sacra), St. Anthony's Museum and the House of Jose Cercas (Casa Museu Pintor Jose Cercas).

All four museums can be easily seen in a few hours and a trip to see them can also include Aljezur's other attractions such as the Moorish Castle and the Old Toll House and Inn.

Inside the museum

The Aljezur Municipal Museum has a little bit of everything housed in an historic building - the old blue and white Town Hall that dates from 1883. There are the usual archaeological remains from the area around town dating back to the Neolithic period, Islamic period ceramics and ethnographic exhibits reflecting the lifestyle of the local inhabitants. These include farming implements, brightly-painted fishing boats, fishing nets, ploughs, domestic crafts and an old horse-drawn carriage.

Exhibits

The museum has wall panels in English and Portuguese explaining the exhibits and some interesting black and white photographs.

Municipal Museum Aljezur

Opening hours may vary according to the season, though are basically Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

From the Mercado Municipal where buses to Lisbon and Lagos stop, walk over the river and turn right and walk up the hill. The Municipal Museum is on your left at the top of the street.
