Afonso de Albuquerque is one of the great Portuguese heroes of the Age of Discoveries. A larger than life character, Albuquerque carved out a Portuguese empire in India and parts of South East Asia.

A statue and park in his honour is located in Belem just outside the Museu da PresidĂȘncia da RepĂșblica (Museum of the President of the Republic).

Afonso de Albuquerque stands on a white, stone column surrounded by lawns and small ponds. The statue is by the sculptor, Costa Mota and stands on a neo-Manueline base, surrounded by fountains.

Access - Getting There

The park is close to Belem Station on the Cascais Line or can be reached by tram #15.

A good hotel just to the north of the park is Jeronimos 8. Also nearby is the famous cafe Pasteis de Belem, well-known for its delicious custard tarts.
