The ground was built in 1929 and holds a capacity of 11,000 spectators. The football club, nicknamed the Sea Wolves (Lobos do Mar) has played over 20 seasons in the top league of Portuguese football, the Primeira Liga, but now has fallen on harder times. It has been rather overshadowed by Rio Ave in the town of Vila do Conde to the south.
