History

The history of Coral beer dates back to 1872 when the Companhia dos Engenhos do Norte, a sugar cane processing company, was founded in Madeira. In the 1920s, the company began producing beer to diversify its business and compete with other breweries on the island.

Initially, Coral beer was only sold on Madeira, but in the 1950s, the company began exporting it to mainland Portugal and other countries. The beer became particularly popular in Angola, a former Portuguese colony in Africa, where it was exported in large quantities.

In the 1980s, the Companhia dos Engenhos do Norte was acquired by the Blandy family, who continued to produce Coral beer under their new company, the Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira.

Today, Coral beer is one of the most popular brands of beer in Madeira, and it is still brewed using traditional methods and high-quality ingredients.

Coral beer comes in several varieties, including lager, stout, and non-alcohol. The beer has won several awards for its taste and quality, and it is often enjoyed alongside traditional Madeiran dishes such as Espetada, a skewered meat dish, and Bolo do Caco, a type of bread made with sweet potato.

Popularity

In addition to its popularity among locals and tourists on Madeira, Coral beer has also gained a following in other parts of Portugal and around the world. Its unique taste and long history have made it a beloved symbol of Madeira's culture and traditions along with another Madeira-produced drink - poncha.
