Farol do Cabo Sardão, Alentejo

Farol do Cabo Sardao Lighthouse, Alentejo, Portugal.

The Farol do Cabo Sardão is located on the dramatic cliffs of Ponta do Cavaleiro, within the parish of São Teotónio, in the municipality of Odemira (Beja district), southwest Alentejo, Portugal. It sits on a cliff about 68 meters above sea level along the scenic Alentejo coast between Almograve and Zambujeira do Mar, easily accessed via a small road off the N393. The lighthouse is at the westernmost point of the Alentejo region.

The lighthouse is a prominent landmark on the Fisherman's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores) a spectacular 226.5 km coastal hike from Porto Covo to Lagos. It typically takes 11-13 days to walk. As part of the Rota Vicentina, it runs along Atlantic cliffs and beaches. Completed in 1915 it originally operated on petroleum vapor before being connected to the public grid in 1984. The lighthouse tower was built on the land side of its support building, which is rare.

The 17 meter (56 ft) tall lighthouse itself is not open for public entry, but the grounds are free to visit.
