Praça da República is the main, central square in Tomar with its statue of Gualdim Pais, usually with a pigeon perched on his helmet.
The square is ringed by a number of elegant 17th century buildings, cafes and the old town hall (pictured above). The luxury, 5-star Hotel República Boutique Hotel is on the square with some rooms offering views of the tranquil space. On the other end of the square from the town hall is the Igreja de São João Baptista (Church of John the Baptist).
