History

The original church dates back to the early 17th century. It was begun in 1606 and completed ten years later in 1616. It is thought the church was built over a chapel originally dedicated to São Gonçalo (Gundisalvus of Amarante).

However, much of the present church including the azulejos tiles on the front of the building date from the 18th century.

Outside the church stands a statue of John the Evangelist.

Interior

The interior is noted for its magnificent gilded woodwork especially on its two altarpieces, one dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Apresentação and the other to Jesus the Saviour.

On the side walls are two more gilded shrines, one to Senhora da Luz ('Our Lady of Light') and the other to the Cruz do Senhor do Bendito ('The Cross of the Lord of the Blessed').

One statue of note is a Gothic alabaster Virgin made in Nottingham, England.
