Household Waste Recycling in Portugal

Household Waste Recycling in Portugal

Household waste is recycled in Portugal from color-coded bins (ecoponto) in many municipalities.

Household Waste Recycling in Portugal

These recycling bins are pictured in the pretty town of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão.

Yellow is for plastic (plastic bottles etc) and metal, green is for glass (bottles should be uncapped) and blue for paper and card (newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes etc). The grey bin is for non-recyclable, non-hazardous, household waste. Organic waste goes in the brown bin if available (not pictured here).

Portugal recycles about 28% of its urban waste which is below the European average of 46%, according to Reuters.

Information (in Portuguese) on recycling household waste is available at www.omeuecoponto.pt

Electrical appliances can be taken to a larger recycling center. Waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of in landfills and in incinerators.

Micro ebikes in Lisbon

Micro ebikes in Lisbon

Like electric scooters, micro ebikes can also be rented on the streets of Lisbon using an app.

Bird micro bikes in Lisbon
The two main companies renting ebikes in operation in the capital and other cities in Europe are Bird and Lime.

Bird began life in California, rival Lime with its Lime-S scooters is also from California and is owned by Uber - the taxi-hailing giant.

Uber also has lots of its distinctive red Jump electronic bicycles for hire on Lisbon's streets.

First download the apps to your phone, then the ebikes can be unlocked by scanning a QR code on the handlebars.

Scooting off into busy Lisbon traffic without wearing a helmet looks a rather, risky proposition so please take care. Lime recommends, in fact, that riders do wear a helmet.

This new means of transport on Lisbon's streets is not without its critics, however. Soon after they were introduced in October 2018, residents and travelers began to complain about them left thoughtlessly on sidewalks, blocking the way and spoiling the view.

If you do hire an ebike, please act responsibly.

Currency Exchange Cambio in Portugal

Currency Exchange (Cambio) in Portugal

Probably the easiest way to finance your holiday in Portugal is to use an ATM (multibanco). Most western Europeans can simply use their bank cards to withdraw money from any of Portugal's ATM's. They are found at banks and major railway stations.

Currency Exchange (Cambio) in Portugal

The machine may give you the option of being charged in your own currency, if you are not in the Eurozone. It is cheaper to be charged in Euros. If you opt for your own currency you will be liable to a Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) fee of around 7.5%.

If you want to exchange foreign cash for Euros in Portugal it is usually quicker to go to a currency exchange kiosk (cambio) rather than a bank.

Cambio can be found at airports, of course, and major stations. The one pictured is at São Bento in Porto.

NovaCâmbios is a large operator of many cambio in the country with over 50. See their website for a complete list.
